Long ago there were only a few shops, and people had to go to the nearest town to buy their goods. Buying and selling were carried on after Mass, but this is done now. In this way goods for the house were sold.
Money was not always given for goods long ago, but there was vegetables or wool or eggs given in exchange. Sometimes when goods were sold the person who bought them would work for the seller to pay him.
Old people long ago said they got goods on "boot" which means they got them for half price. Sometimes they (got) said they got them on "tick" which meant they got them for about a month without paying for them then they would pay half-price for them and after a while pay the other half(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
