- May and August are considered unlucky months for marriage. Money is given as a dowry. No one remembers marriages taking place in the houses. The bridegroom goes to the altar first and the bride is given away by her father if living, and if not her nearest relative. If any reception is held it is usually held in the bride's house. A special dress is bought for the wedding day which is not worn afterwards. There is a dance held the night of the wedding at the bride's house. Men dress in women's clothes and come to the house and dance for a while. Long ago people raced their horses round the country. There is an old remark about the bride wearing "Something old and something new, something borrowed and something blue." The bride and the bridegroom generally go to Dublin on their honeymoon.
