there is a shape of a cross in the ground in this field. When St Banice was being buried there was a fight between the Aghaboe people and the Kilkenny people as to where he would be buried. When the fight started the people said "Spill no more blood" and immediately two coffins were seen. Then the two coffins were lifted up off the ground and across was seen where they were.
Once Mr Bergin of Springfield was cutting hay in the Cross-field and when he came to where the Cross is, the beam of the machine got broken. Then he got another machine and the horses would not go where the Cross is. The grass remains green around the cross throughout the year. Even if this field was ploughed, the Cross would remain in it. This incident gave rise to the townland of Cross.
These place-names are interesting and give us more knowledge about our own district.
