    Two miles south of Callan was an ancient church the site of which is still a "churchyard" or cemetery. It was the ancient parochial church of the parish in existence before the town of Callan
    A small steam - the Abha Bheag runs by the graveyard and receives the waters of a spring called Tobar Bhríghde
    None of the inscriptions date beyond the beginning of the 18th century. Two inscriptions occur on two long horizontal slabs lying side by side now deeply sunk in the ground.

    1. "Here lieth the body of the Revd. Phillip Purcell parish priest of Callan who - parted this life 8 Ber the 13th A.D. 63 years 1744. Requiscat in Pace"
    2. Here lieth the body of the Revd Father James Butler who was Parish Priest of Callan. He died 24th May 1768 aged 45 years. May his soul rest in Peace.

    Humphrey O Sullivan kept a school in Callan and was held in great repute as an adept of the Irish language erected a monument - on which was written.
