- In olden times bread was made from the corn grown locally such as wheat and oats. Every family had a quern (grind stone) and they used to make their own flour. Different kinds of bread were made - oaten bread, wheaten bread, barley bread, rye bread and potato cakes. Fruit cakes were made as well. Milk was added when kneading and sometimes water. Square marks were cut on the top of the oaten bread when made in the way it could be easily broken. People used to make bread every day or as often as they'd want it. Bread was baked in pans and bake-pots and it was baked in front of the fire too standing against a support which was made of timber. Griddle bread was made the oftenest of any. It is made in places still.
