Nearer and nearer came Cromwells soldiers and as they did greater became the fear of the monks. The night being so dark the soldiers passed by the abbey and continued on their march psalm-singing and yelling. When the monks thought they were safe they crept from their hiding places and began ringing the bells in thanks to God for having saved them from a horrible death. The soldiers on hearing the bells immediately returned and murdered the monks leaving not a single one alive and burned their abbey.
