During the famine the people used to eat nettles, dock-roots, cabbage, cabbage-stumps, grass and other things. After the famine a fever broke out. It was called enteric fever. A great number of people died in Tybroughney of the fever. Miss Morrisey was one woman who died of the fever. During the Famine there was a garrison of English soldiers in Bessborough Park. They got the fever too. Three of them died crossing over to England. They did not die of this hunger. A ship-load of food came into Fiddown every month. There were four hundred soldiers in the garrison. During the famine there came a very heavy snow-fall.
