- Saint Brigid was born in Faughart near Dundalk during the fifth century. According to tradition she had red hair.
In her youth she served as a dairy maid for her father who was a chieftain in Leinster. She had to take care of twelve cows. When she made the butter she divided it into thirteen parts, one large part and twelve lesser parts. She did this in honour of Christ and the twelve apostles. The large part she gave to the poor and the strangers.
