   Cuckoos leaves about the middle of August. This is one of the many signs that Autumn is rapidly approaching. At the end of September the swallows begin to gather on the telegraph wires. We don't see them going because they fly by night. As they near the sea, they see the lights on lighthouse, they dash for these lights and thousands of them are killed against the rocks around the lighthouse. These are replaced by other birds that spend the summer in the northern countries of Europe and come to spend the winter with us. These are the woodcock, the mountain thrush, the plover and the wild goose.

   The birds in this district are divided into four classes - those that build in trees, those that build in hedges, those that build in banks and on the ground and those that build in walls and houses.
