- 548(a) A Hedge School was conducted in a little cabin built at Dooneen Bridge, Dooneed, Kilcummin parish, Co Kerry. It was in operation in the year 1856, when a man named Feahan gave instruction there.(b) Hedge School was also conducted in a cabin situated in Dooneed Cohereen, in the year 1825. The teacher's name was John O'Connor. If the teacher of a Hedge School were not a native of the locality he would spend the night in a scholar's house. Reading, writing and arithmetic were taught in each of the above schools. English was the only language used in giving instruction and it was also the only language taught. The writing was done on slates with slate-pencils. There was no blackboard used. The pupils were arranged in wooden seats around the walls. Considerable attention was paid to spelling. The pupils used a spelling book and they paid the teacher for instructing them.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
