- The different kinds of bread used in this district in olden times were stampy, oatenmeal bread and yellow meal bread. The oatenmeal bread was made from oats grown locally. About sixty years ago the people used querns to grind the oatenmeal. They consisted of two flat flags on one the oats was placed and the other placed down on it, and the oats was ground by twisting a handle.
