  1. My townland Ballinacartin got its name from the forge which was erected by a man named Begley who came from Iveragh a poor scholar. Like all poor scholars of his time he had a love of learning in him. He travelled from house to house learning and finally settled down here and set up a great business which is carried on today by his descendants. They made spades, slanes, gates and fire cranes, for use in kitchens and were also considered great horse shoers. There is a little river near the place and they used to shoe the wheels there.

  2. Long ago the people used to set their own plot of Flax. When it used to be fully grown its blossom used to be a blue flower the same as the flower of the vetches. Then the people used to pull it and clean it well and sheaf it out. If they wanted to measure it they used to measure it with a pottle. The pottle was a timber vessel more the shape of a mug than anything but it was wider in the top than in the bottom. When it would be dried well they used to make bundles of it and soak it in bogs and put rocks up on it to keep it pressed down well. It used be left there until it was well soaked and it used to be brought in to dry then. Then it used be spread out
