    The landlord demanded a rent and very many unable to pay it were thrown out of their homes to perish and die by the wayside. About a million people are supposed to have emigrated from Ireland to the United States, Canada, Scotland and England to escape death from starvation at home as the majority of these poor people had to leave their homes through the failure of the potato crop to live or die in foreign lands.
