  1. (a) On November Night 60 years ago young people played the following trick. They flung a ball of yarn into a lime-kiln and kept hold of the free end of the wool. Then they started to wind a new ball from that end until they felt a check on the thread. Then the player asked "Who holds my thread"? and in reply heard the name of his (or her) future life partner.
    (b) The player went to the barn at midnight to winnow oats, and said "who'll put oats in my riddle"? and the future husband or wife appeared and did so.
    (a) and (b) above were then as now, considered "bad" tricks
