- Among the many local characters we have had I think one in particular named "The Bird" Connor was the most prominent of all.
There was scarcely wedding or a wake or indeed any little gathering where drink was poured out freely that the Bird Connor did not attend and was always the centre of attraction.
A story is told that the Bird on one occasion ate five mackeral and after a sound sleep woke to ask his wife: "Mane, did I ate a bit to-day?"
Another story is told about the bird. He was on a Sunday in Flaherty's public house. At that time there were stationed in Ardfert a policeman named Hawkins. Flaherty ordered the Bird out and the Bird said in reply "Surely, Flaherty you won't throw the Bird into the claws of the hawk and he watching me".
