- Shops were not common in olden times apart from those in the towns, even there buying and selling was carried on in the market square, where a weighbridge was, and is still, in use for weighing purposes.
Hawkers or "cant-men" as they were locally known used to come to Carrick-on-Shannon and erect their stalls on the streets. Some of the shop-keepers now-a-days were only hawkers in the days gone by. When the "Conscription Act" was enforced and the men of the country had to go to the war, they sold their clothes which were bought by the hawkers and as the old people say "they made their(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
