- Shops were not common in olden times apart from those in the towns, even there buying and selling was carried on in the market square, where a weighbridge was, and is still, in use for weighing purposes.
Hawkers or "cant-men" as they were locally known used to come to Carrick-on-Shannon and erect their stalls on the streets. Some of the shop-keepers now-a-days were only hawkers in the days gone by.
