    there was a Fransciscan Friary in Jamestown. The old town of Jamestown was on the Carrick side of the arch which is still to be seen there. It was created a borough in 1621 and sent two members to Parliament. Sir Charles Coote for his services to the crown was granted large estates and the town of Jamestown. He built a strong Castle and fortified the town for protection from the natives. The walls of the fortification are still to be seen and its dimensions are 20' high and 6' ft in width. There were two in them one in the northern wall and one in the southern. The Castle of Jamestown fell to the Confederates in 1645. The town was retaken by Colonel Oliver in 1646.
