- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)used. The both pitch and grease used to be boiled. When they used to be well boiled they used to turn it out to cool. When it was hard it was wax.
Long ago the coopers used to make pails churns and butter firkins for the people. The way they used to make the pails was to cleave out the staves with a cleaver and put them together. A treshoop made from sally rods and woven with twigs used to be put on top of the staves. When the staves were fastened a hoop of either iron or wood used be put on. Then the bottom used to be put in and the treshoop knocked off.
Churns were made in the same way only the bottom was made first.Collected by Mary Gaffney
