tradition. Having searched for some time at a spot called (Poll-a-Veeny?) they came across a mine shaft which had been filled in with stones. These were emptied out of the shaft and it was found that the depth of this shaft was 28 feet and had being cut out of solid rock. At the bottom of this shaft and leading outwards towards a stream for about 25 yards was a passage 4 feet high by 3 feet wide also cut out of this solid rock. Leading inwards in the opposite direction was a second passage or tunnel 6 feet high 4 feet wide and about 15 yards in length.
At the end of this passage was an old (Windless?) was found on top of another shaft which was then full of water. When this water was pumped out the depth of this shaft was found to be 40 feet and about 6 feet in diameter.
A man was lowered down by ropes bearing a torch but no other tunnel could be found or anything of note. This proved that the mine was used in early days. The shafts are still open awaiting examination.
