- There are not many ruins of old houses around here, except two down near Leacarrow bog. One was owned by the Banes, and the other belonged to Ellen Quinn.
The houses long ago were all thatched, and they used only have two very small windows and a hole through the roof instead of a chimney. The floors were made from yellow clay. It was called doibh-buidhe. They used also plaster the walls with it. Rushes were used for thatching the houses.
They had no candles these times, but they used to have rush- lights instead. First the green skin was taken off them and then they were dipped in grease. Then they stuck them in a lump of hard clay and lit them.- Bailitheoir
