He used to spend two hrs every day teaching.
The teacher came from some part of Drogheda. He was very nice to the children. He knew a little Irish but all he knew he taught it to the children.
He used to send out a couple of boys in each direction so that no English soldiers might come unknown to them. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday he used to teach. The school was made from wood branches and big stones for chairs. They used to have the trunk of a tree to write on. The teacher spent three months in each school . He used to get one and sixpence every week from each child. Some of the farmers children were poor, and used to have no money to pay so they used to give him free lodgings and food in their turns. They used to learn latin and greek in it also. They used to learn, and speak latin and Greek like we speak English There was a hedge school near the church in Kilconnell.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
