Hedge Schools
There was a hedgeschool in Hillswood long ago. It was under a big wood of trees, and it was covered around with green branches.
A man named Pat Shauhnessy was the schoolmaster, and he came from Donegal.
He got twelve shillings every year, and he got his lodgings free in different houses.
He taught the children english, sums and drilling. He had slate and slate pencils.
Every teacher remained two months in each district. Every teacher used to have two big boys on a hill watching to see if anyone was coming to kill them because they were catholics. They had school three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and had three different tasks(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
