- In former times people did not begin to wear boots or shoes until they were grown up men and women and even then they used not to wear them always. When going to town they used to tie the shoes together and carry them across their shoulders and only put them on when nearing the town. When returning they would take them off again. An old woman named Bridget Clancy who lived at James Coy's house in Derryhoyle never wore a boot or shoe in her life. She was a native of Connemara. An old beggar man who frequented this district about thirty years ago never wore any shoes. He was always called "Laboreena" because of his ragged clothes.
