- Long ago there were no lamps. It was candles the people used. People used to make their own candles from tallow or resin.
When they were going to make candles, the people put skins of animals into a big pot on the fire to boil. The inside of a rush was dipped into the tallow and brought out again with a layer of tallow on it. Sometimes people did not bother making candles, they split a piece of fir into pieces about 12 inches long and as thick as a match and lit one of them when a light was wanted.
