    nearly killed with the fall. He stood for a few minutes looking at the wreck and then he left the donkey eating the grass along the ditch while he went into Carndonagh to give the other keg of Whisky to one of his customers.
    While he was away the donkey got thirsty after eating the grass for an hour or so, and he began to look round to see if there was anything to drink. He came across a pool of poteen on the road and he drank every drop of it.
    When Dan came back the old donkey was lying stretched along the road drunk. Dan thought he was dead and he skinned him. He sent the skin on to Derry. Dan came home but he wasn't long in the house when he thought he heard a sound. He went out and he saw the old donkey coming up the lane shivering with the cold. He was a butcher as well as a poteen maker and as it happened to be a Saturday he was killing two sheep.
