- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)it lasted the longest. When you thatch your house about one foot deep it will last about six years. The thatch was kept on with scollops which are made from the briar or bramble bush.
On every farm long ago was a small kiln for burning lime. these kilns were about ten feet high from the bottom. Some of them were dug into the ground in a bog, our own is dug into a high bank in the moss.
Every farmer got lime stone from the nearest kiln, which was at Carndonagh. They "knaped" the lime stone and put it into the kiln.
Turf was put in also between each spread of lime stone. When the lime was burned, it was used for many thing, but most of it was put on the land. These kilns were very useful they are still on the land, but they are never used.- Bailitheoir
