- Lime BurningThere were many lime-stone quarries in this district years ago, and many men were employed in them. There are no quarries working at the present time.The owners of these quarries not only burned the lime themselves but gave the limestone to other men to burn, thus a lot of men were employed.The kiln in which the lime was burned was built like an egg-cup. The lime-stone was mixed with anthracite coal.In the bottom of the kiln there was a small opening and in this the fire was lighted, and as the heat went up through the kiln it burned the coal. Two tons of coal were required to burn fifty tons of lime-stone.As the lime burned it sank down and more stones were placed on the top. The burning occupied about three days but the heat was so great that it was a week before the kiln could be opened.The lime was taken to(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
