1. Fairies

   It is the common belief that the fairies left this district one stormy night. It was known as “Clarke’s Night”. The people in the townland of Toome were supposed to hear them talking going down through the townland.
   There was a market in Glenties that day the storm arose. These three men who are now dead were at the fair buying pigs :- Johnnie Elliott, James Melley, & James Noble. At that time there was no Gweebarra Bridge and they had to cross the Bay in a Ferry Boat belonging to Paddy Gallagher. When they came back with their pigs as far as Paddy’s the house was full of people waiting to the storm would cease a little as Paddy wasn’t able to go out with the boat to leave them over. Bedtime came and the storm didn’t cease. The people of the house decided to go to bed and the visitors to stay until morning.
   As they sat around the fire the door burst open. They thought it hadn’t been latched properly and one went to the door and latched it. This was done a few times so at last they decided to bolt. This they did and they were no sooner at the fire again until it burst open. They knew then that it wasn’t the wind that was the cause, so they came to the conclusion it was the fairies.
