    oars were made locally and the usual material used in them was deal.
    The sails were large and made of grey cotton. Very often they were steeped in seal oil for a week before being used. The boat ropes were of hemp but the ropes for anchorage purposed were made of fir.
    (Ropes for household purposes were often made of pounded rushes dried and pleated and then toughened with seal oil).
    Flax was at that time grown in the district and from it lines for fishing were made locally.
    All the anchors, keel bands and other such iron works were done locally by the smith. He made nails, hake hooks and mast rings.
