- The common food used in this district seventy years ago was potatoes, cabbage and turnips but now none of these are used but potatoes. These foodstuffs were much more healthy than those used at the present time.
Porridge was also a common diet of the people of the district many years ago. This was made by boiling water and then mixing oaten meal through it and leaving both boil slowly for half an hour. In the winter the table was brought out in the centre of the kitchen in front of the fire for each meal.
Tea was introduced to this district about sixty years ago. In olden times the people never used any white bread, it was all brown, on that account they had very sound teeth. They used also use a lot of raw vegetables and this also helped to protect their teeth.
