The fireplace usually was in the middle of the gable. In olden times the people had no cranes but a stick went from one side of the chimney to the other, a chain was hanging from the stick and on this chain they hung their kettles and pots to boil. In the kitchen there was a little window with one pane of glass.
Long ago the people had no lamps but they made candles. They made candles out of grease and they put a bit of corduroy in the middle for a wick. They burned foideogs for a fire. The floors were made of daib and they put rushes on the floors to keep them dry. There was a rope made of rushes going from one rafter to the other and they hung the clothes on this.
