The boats at once set out for land, but it was very dark; some boats were farther out than the others, and in the darkness did not know where they were going.
One boat and its crew were never seen or heard of again; the entire crew of eight men were lost.
All the boats were broken into pieces against the rocks at the shore, but the other men managed to get ashore, except one poor man who was lame. He jumped with the rest, but was not able to swim against the huge waves.
Some of the men said afterwards that before the storm broke out, they saw an empty boat floating on the sea, and they said it must be a warning to them.
