    Some people put a live coal from the fire under the dash to prevent the fairies fringing the butter.
    It takes about half an hour to churn. We always churn by hand. The dash is the old churn is worked up and down.
    It is worked up and down at first but when the milk "breaks", a rolling motion is given to the dash in order to gather the small particles into larger lumps.
    The butter is then made.
