- (continued from previous page)to say mass in churches and when they got chance they said mass in forts and hidden places where they thought they would not be noticed. Any priest who was found saying mass in these places had his head cut off and sold to the Government for five pounds.
- The famine of 1846 - 1847 laid this district waste and very thinly populated. Before the famine there were thousands of people in the country. During the famine thousands died of sickness and disease.
