When driving the cows we say "how, how"!" Straw is the bedding in the cow-house or cró - sometimes ferns and leaves are used. When a swallow nests in a cow house it is unlucky to remove the nest. On May Eve people lock the doors of cowhouses lest anyone would take the milk. These are people who can take the milk and give an evil-eye to a cow. This lathe is done by saying "she's a fine or lovely cow!" without saying "God bless her!"
When a cow calves people burn the hair of its udder with a blessed candle to prevent milk fever.
A frightened cow or a beaten cow will not give milk.
When a beast died the people cut off its tail, kept it in their own house for a while and then put it up on the roof of the cró. This brought luck. The glas gaibhneach grazed in Rhinanna.(continues on next page)
