  1. Dyeing
Black moss which is found in the bogs around this district and which is also got in the hills was used for dyeing clothes.
The moss was washed to get rid of the clay Etc. adhering to it. The cloth or thread to be dyed was put into a pot, full of water. The moss was then placed in this pot & put over a fire till boiled. Then after a while this moss was taken out & fresh moss put in. This was done several times until the cloth or thread was dyed.
    This moss dyed things brown.
The foregoing got from John Hogan, Tailor, Whitegate.
