  1. 5. We have a churn at home. It is three feet high and two feet wide. It is a round one and only new. The article for churning with is called a staff and the articles for taking off the butter are called trenchers. Churning is done three times weekly in Winter and about four times weekly in Summer. The churning is done mostly by young people and strangers who come into the house give a hand because it is said that they would take away the butter if they did not. The churn-dash is moved up and down when the butter is on. Butter is never touched by the hands.
