  1. Bread
Long ago bread was made from wheaten flour and oatmeal. The wheat and oats were grown by the people themselves, they made flour by grinding the wheat and oats in the quern.
Potato cake, boxty and oat cakes were made. Milk as usually used but water was used for oaten cake. The old people used to put designs of flowers on cakes as ornaments. They usually baked enough bread for one or two days. Basin was the name given to the vessel they used for mixing bread.
The bread was baked in a dutch oven. Sometimes it was made in a pot oven. Oaten bread was baked on a bread iron standing in front of the fire. They used to make griddle bread. Boxty was made for Halloween and hot cross buns for Good Friday
