    In Monaghan long ago each shop keeper bought fat which came off the sheep. This they put on a pan on the fire and melted. Then they poured the liquid into pots which the country people bought. The children were sent out to the fields to gather rushes. At night the fathers and mothers peeled the green off them. Then the peeled rushes or cotton was dipped into the melted fat, lifted out and dried. This was done two or three times until the candle was a required thickness.
