  1. Most houses were small long ago. Some of them were built of clay and straw.
    The houses were covered with heather and sometimes straw. They used get the heather on the mountain and they used grow the straw.
    In some places there was only one room in the house and the bed was in the kitchen. There was also what they call settle beds in farmers' houses.
    Against the gable-end the hearth used be. Ther used be chimneys inside in the houses.
    The chimneys were made of stone and mortar. One door was in the houses. The doors werw closed with an iron bar. There was a small window in every room.
    The floor was made of clay. There was a half door in every house. The fire wood of long ago was timber and turf. In some houses the people used dig a channel in the middle of the house around a pan of
