  1. Long ago there were no National Schools. The schools they had were called Hedge Schools. There used to be a Hedge School in Maurice's Mills. There was a house in the end of a field, called the Muna Pairce and in that field the teachers used to teach the children. The name of the teacher was Mr O'Connell. The teachers who taught the children were called Hedge teachers. The teacher would go to a house and stay for two or three nights and all the children around that place would crowd in and he would teach them whatever he knew and then he used to go to another house and so on.
The teachers had no Irish long ago and it was forbidden to speak Irish. They would be slapped when they went to school. Long ago it was a bit of a board left on two stones they had instead of seats. They had no desks as we have now. Long ago they had no books or pencils to write with. What they had was a slate and a long thin piece of stone with a long point.
