  1. There was a man, his wife and their children living in a house together at one time
    Some men used to go out of the town for eighteen miles in the country selling herrings.
    It happened that this woman bought a herring one Friday. She roasted it on the tongs as was the custom at that time.
    When she had it roasted, she put it on a plate and she threw water on it.
    Then they all sat round the plate, the children used to have to dip their potatoe in the water and if any of them went near the herring she would
