    became very common to allow more light. The old floors were made of clay and when when these were being made a hole was left in the floor for placing the food for the cat and the dog.
    The principal fuels were turf and bog-dear, splinters. They used to make rush candles long ago and these served as a light at night. These were made by peeling the rushes and dipping them in grease.
    In the houses in former times there were only three rooms the kitchen, the parlour in which there was usually a bed and a loft. The loft was over the parlour and there was one little window on the gable-end. This was the only light there was in the room. This loft was reached by means
