- (continued from previous page)Some places in the neighbourhood parishs bear names which indicate that relief was given out e.g. Drum bearra [?] Muileann Soar while a very short journey from my native townland is a field called called the "Pothaire" where scores of famine victims are supposed to have been buried.Before those victims were buried in the one pit. Many of these died from disease and starvation as the potato crop failed in the month of July 1845. it came in three nights and first the roots of the potatoes were affected and afterwards rotted. The "Pothaire" is about 1/8 mile from the village of Ballyhaise and two miles from my townland. People whose relatives were buried here often came in their sorrow to the common grave and there were many weird ghost stories of apparitions supposed to have been seen near the "Pothaire". When the bread "yellow meal" was being distributed at the "Castle" the Humphrey's family were careful to extract promises from the people to send their children to the "Castle School".
