    churches they had them for their own use. We have an example here in Old Leighlin. When the monks left we are told the bell lost its sweet chime. It was hard for the people to meet all demands - Rents and tithes. The proctor would come and claim part of everything they had. We are told a little story about the proctor. There was one not very far away and when he was going to be buried they could not stir the coffin. An old man in the crowd told them to get four proctors so they did and they removed it the same as if it were only a feather. The people at the funeral never caught sight of it only crossing a hill. There is another told about a poor scholar. On a gentleman's gate there was a Notice -
    "Heathen, Jew, Atheist,
    All are welcome only a Papist."
    Underneath this notice the scholar wrote the following lines
