  2. 6. Mrs. Catherine Donnelly, from the townland of the Curragh the parish of Kinnitty, and Co. Offaly could make candles from the fat of pigs. She would boil the fat until it was melted. Then she would put it into a shape for candles, and she would have a wick inside in the shape. She would make the wick from cotton thread. She used to burn the candles herself and she would never have to buy one.

  3. My Grandfather Michael Carry, Knockbarron, parish of Kinnitty, Co. Offaly, used to make candles out of the fat of sheep. He used to render the fat and put it into the candle shape and put a cotton wick in them. He always used them himself.
