  1. The fairs are held in Edenderry every month. The cattle fair is held on the first Monday of each month and the pig fair is held on the following day. Six or seven years ago the pig fair was held on Monday and the cattle fair on Tuesday. The cattle fair is held in O' Connell square and in J.K.L. street. The fair starts at about nine o' clock and continues until three or four o' clock. The cattle come into the fair in droves. Some people bring in their cattle early as they like to have their cattle in a certain part of the fair but others do not bother where they have them. They generally stand in the handiest place they get. Cattle and pigs are brought into the fairs by people who live within a radius of about ten miles. Sometimes dealers from Dublin come to the fairs to buy pigs and cattle. Each dealer has his own mark. The biggest fair of the year is generally the November fair because people who take grazing land for eleven months their time is up on the first of November. When cattle are being sold the owner asks about a pound more than he expects to get for each one and the buyer bids then shillings or a pound less than he intends to give for each animal the bargain is made by spitting on the hands and the clapping of hands.
