    William Howley and his sister lived in Killowen in a fine old farm-house on the banks of the Slaney, and about four miles from the town of Wexford.
    It was the year 1798 when the men of Wexford were to make such a gallant stand for freedom. William Howley decided to throw in his lot with his friends and neighbours.
    One night after Wexford had been taken by the English army, Howley's sister heard a knock at the door. On opening it, she was astonished to see her brother outside.
    He came in and was having some refreshment when he heard a loud knock followed by a demand:-
    "Open in the King's name".
