  1. In the time of St. Patrick there were people living where the Ferry - Carrick castle now stands, and St Patrick asked them to bring him across the river Slaney. They were pagans and they refused to bring him. At that time there was no bridge there and he sailed across the river on a plate !
    It is said to be the deepest part of the river.
    Soon after, he came back and taught the people the true faith.
    He also banished the snakes from that country into the river Slaney.
