woollen thread and spreading it around where they were digging. It was not long till they had gone down a good piece. After a while a hen and chickens came out and started scratching the clay back again so they dug away until they had the spades down on the chest. But the minute they struck the chest of gold they heard a terrible sound and they thought that all the trees of Woodgraigue were bursting out of the roots and then they heard a voice saying "woe to the man who seeks the property of Thomas Neville" and they all fled in terror and one of them fainted and they had to carry him.
